THE DEIFICATION OF CAROL DANVERS
So I just watched the very controversial Captain Marvel, and I actually liked it. Yes, I know the SJW stuff, blah blah blah, it's ultra-feminist, blah blah blah. I enjoyed it nonetheless. I love the Marvel Cinematic Universe and even SJWs are going to have a hard time spoiling it for me (if that was their aim in the first place). Here is a sort of review, not particularly about the message but the *method*, or the allusions and types used to convey it, with particular attention to Carol's arc in the story. That's what I really loved about it. This along with the way it connected itself to the wider cinematic universe made it a good movie for me. It's not the best, but it works.
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Now the main theme I saw was what I would call the "Deification of Carol Danvers". Carol is representative of all women, or rather the feminist vision of women in general, both ideal and not ideal. She is looked down on, controlled and oppressed by men, but she also fights back and actually succeeds in defeating her oppressors. Carol is a "messiah" type figure for humanity in general, but women in particular. It is her defiance of a man, at the behest of her fellow woman martyr, that gifts her the abilities she now possesses. The main villains are controlling men, and a controlling power behind the Kree men (the supreme intelligence). She's mentally enslaved for most of the movie, even if she was unaware of it (the chip on her neck that helped her control her powers, which were controlled by the Kree).
Finally, in her darkest moment, a sort of death (covered and bound by the black tendrils of the supreme intelligence), her mind is co-opted and she is under the power of the supreme intelligence. But it is in this moment that her enslavement ends, the chip that "enslaved" her was broken, and her powers are unleashed. She rises, body burning bright, like a theophany. It is a "resurrection". Vers (her Kree given truncated name, which is a sort of dehumanization) is now Carol Danvers once more, complete and more powerful than ever before.
The fact that she's the inspiration for the name "Avengers" that was given to Fury's program is also a hint of religious allusion. Like a messiah, she's the start of a movement to save the world. But here ends my review. I hope you enjoyed it? If you have any thoughts, you can comment below, I would love to hear them. Pax Christi.
