Meditations on “Creation is Incarnation”: Some Other Thoughts
The entire meditation was inspired from reading Jordan Daniel Wood’s paper Creation Is Incarnation: The Metaphysical Peculiarity of the Logoi in Maximus Confessor. You can get it here. To start this series, read part 1 here, part 2 here, and part 3 here.
Owing to the understanding of God as unity, we say God IS his own knowledge. God knows himself AS God and his knowledge IS God, and this act of Knowing IS himself God. Three orders of relations, One God. God the Knower (Father), God the Known (Son), and God the act of Knowing (Spirit). God knows Himself as Himself. God IS what he knows, and he knows us. That’s interesting.
God knows us, but God is what he knows. God is infinite, we are finite. How do we reconcile this problem. On one side is pantheism (the Universe as Divine by nature) and on the other side Deism (God having no relation with us, therefore undermining the Knower knowing the known paradigm and therefore the Trinity collapses into a demiurgic monad).
The incarnation offers a Solution. Chalcedon defines Christ as two natures, one person. The infinite and finite meet and are United in one person, apart from which the finite doesn’t exist. This one person is Christ, the second member of the Trinity, and interestingly, he is God the Known.
God the Known is also finite, he is us who are known. God the Known is United with creation (that is known) in one person. You can’t meaningfully separate them from that person. The finite that is known is only known (and therefore only exists) as United and sustained by it’s identification and unity with the infinitely known. In layman’s terms, Creation exists only as the incarnation of the Son.
The razor edge middle is Christ himself, who is both God and Man, Creator and Creation. You, along with the star in the farthest Galaxy, are (at least in potentia) part of the incarnation. Hence why Paul can say in Him We all are made alive. This alone is the most wondrous Universalism, a gospel that reaches all, even Satan himself. All will “bend the knee” to the True Khal named Christ and his Khaleesi named Church. Amen.
